Additional Education Support
Coláiste Cholmcille has three ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) rooms and a multi-disability room, which involves integrating students with diverse learning needs into the broader school community while providing targeted support. The school prioritises student-centred learning by developing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) tailored to each student’s needs, strengths, and interests.
Specialist teachers, SNAs (Special Needs Assistants), and mainstream staff collaborate to ensure a continuum of support, from in-class differentiation to withdrawal sessions for specific interventions. The ASD rooms offer a structured and calm environment where students can access sensory supports and social skills programmes, while still being encouraged to take part in mainstream classes where appropriate.
The multi-disability room provides a highly supported setting for students with more complex physical, cognitive, or medical needs. It operates with a strong focus on life skills, communication, and independence, using assistive technologies and adapted curricula where necessary.
Staff work closely with families, external therapists, and support services such as NEPS (National Educational Psychological Service) to ensure holistic development. Inclusive practices are reinforced through school-wide awareness programmes, peer mentoring, and a culture of respect and diversity, ensuring all students are valued members of the school community regardless of ability.
