Leaving Certificate Life, Community and Work (LCW)

We are pleased to offer Life, Community and Work (LCW) as part of the Leaving Certificate. This course is designed to support students in developing the personal, social and practical skills they need for adult life, further education, and employment.

What is LCW?

LCW is a student-centred course that focuses on learning through real-life experiences. It helps students build confidence, independence, and a clearer understanding of their role in the world around them.

The course is particularly suited to students who benefit from practical, hands-on learning and who want to develop important life and work skills.

What will students learn?

Through LCW, students will:

  • Build important life skills, including communication, decision-making and personal responsibility
  • Develop social awareness and learn about community involvement and active citizenship
  • Gain valuable work-related skills, including teamwork, organisation and problem-solving
  • Explore their own strengths, interests and future pathways

Students also take part in community activities and work experience, helping them connect their learning to real-life situations.

How is LCW assessed?

LCW is assessed through ongoing coursework rather than final written exams. Students will:

  • Complete tasks and projects based on their experiences
  • Build a portfolio of learning
  • Reflect on their personal growth and achievements
  • This approach allows students to demonstrate their learning in a practical and meaningful way.

Why choose LCW?

LCW is a great choice for students who:

  • Prefer active and practical learning
  • Want to develop independence and confidence
  • Are interested in gaining work and community experience
  • Wish to prepare for life beyond school in a supportive environment

How does LCW support the future?

The course helps students prepare for:

  • Employment opportunities
  • Further education and training
  • Independent living and active participation in their community

LCW equips students with skills for life, making it a valuable addition to their Leaving Certificate journey.
