Why choose Coláiste Cholmcille

This answer to this begins with our Core Values: Respect, Fairness, and Personal Growth. These values put the student at the heart of everything we do.

We believe that CCBS is a community which respects the rights and self-worth of all and aims to provide a happy and safe environment in which the individual may achieve their spiritual, academic and personal potential.

We believe that a school is there to provide a holistic experience for our students. It is important to offer the best academic package available, and our curriculum options offer our students every opportunity for success in a wide range of subjects. The fact that our First Year students don’t make their subject options until they have sampled all subjects for the 1st Year allows students to make the most informed choice possible.

It’s not all academics, however. We are extremely proud of our extracurricular offerings at CCBS. There really is something for everyone. We have a range of sports, music, and drama opportunities. We enter the BT Young Scientist, quizzes, and debating, to name but a few. We are also an Erasmus accredited school offering our students a fantastic opportunity to explore European culture in a variety of ways.

As a DEIS school, we have a range of support to help students and indeed families. We have a Home School Community Liaison and a school completion officer to work with students and families to ensure students are supported in attending school. We offer free food to all students every day, saving families time and money preparing or paying for lunches.

CCBS is the perfect place to allow students to develop and flourish.

Choosing the right secondary school is a pivotal decision that shapes not only a student’s academic trajectory but also their character and future readiness. While academic rigour and facilities are often considered, the underlying core values of an institution are equally, if not more, crucial. A school that deeply embeds Respect, Fairness, and Personal Growth into its ethos offers an environment uniquely conducive to holistic development, fostering well-rounded individuals prepared to thrive in an increasingly complex world.

At the heart of a truly effective educational institution lies Respect. A school where respect is a fundamental principle creates a vibrant and inclusive community. This translates into an atmosphere where students are encouraged to value diverse perspectives, listen attentively to one another, and engage in constructive dialogue. Respect for teachers fosters a more collaborative learning environment, while respect among peers reduces bullying and promotes empathy. When students feel respected, they are more confident to express themselves, ask questions, and take risks in their learning. This culture extends beyond the classroom, influencing interactions in extracurricular activities and sports, ultimately cultivating compassionate and considerate members of the school community and, subsequently, society at large.

Fairness is the bedrock upon which trust and equity are built within any educational setting. A school committed to fairness ensures that every student, regardless of background, ability, or circumstance, is treated with impartiality and given equal opportunities to succeed. This means transparent policies, consistent application of rules, and equitable access to resources and support. In a fair environment, students learn the importance of justice and accountability, understanding that effort is rewarded and mistakes are addressed constructively. This foundational principle teaches them about integrity, reinforces a sense of belonging, and instils confidence that their hard work will be recognised and their needs will be met, fostering a powerful sense of security and motivation.

Finally, a school dedicated to Personal Growth understands that education extends far beyond memorising facts and figures. It is about nurturing the whole individual, encouraging self-discovery, resilience, and the development of essential life skills. This commitment means providing opportunities for students to explore their passions, develop leadership qualities, embrace challenges, and learn from both successes and setbacks. Whether through a diverse range of subjects, clubs, sports, or community service initiatives, the focus is on helping students understand their strengths, address their weaknesses, and cultivate a lifelong love for learning and self-improvement. Such an environment prepares them not just for examinations, but for the dynamic challenges and opportunities of higher education, future careers, and personal fulfilment.

In conclusion, attending a secondary school that prioritises Respect, Fairness, and Personal Growth offers an unparalleled educational experience. These interconnected values create a supportive, equitable, and enriching environment where students feel safe to explore, are motivated to learn, and are empowered to become their best selves. Such a foundation equips them not only with academic knowledge but also with the critical social-emotional skills and ethical compass necessary to navigate their future with confidence, integrity, and a deep understanding of their place in the world.
